In the book Because of Winn-Dixie by: Kate DiCamillo the Dynamic Character is Opal, because she’s going through allot of changes, she’s adapting to a new house, in a new place, and she sort-of tries to make new friends, but it doesn’t really work out. Opal’s 10 so she’s getting near her teen years, which for most is the years where they find out who their real friends are, and what they want to be. though she’s going through these changes, she has this one goal in her mind. Opals biggest goal is to meet her mom or at least know something about her. Ever since Winn-Dixie (this big, ugly dog. as opal described him at first.) came into her life, she’s had more courage to achieve her goal. Winn-Dixie encouraged Opal to ask her father 10 things about her mom (1 for each year she’s been alive.) she wrote them down and studied them with Winn-Dixie until she new everything by heart, so when and if she ever ran into her mom; she’d know it was her.
The two events that encourages Opals first goal to meet her mom was when Winn-Dixie and Opal first met in the Winn-Dixie store. This helped motivate her to achieve her goal because it somehow gave her more confidence in it. Winn-Dixie encouraged her to meet her goal. The second goal that helped motivate her to achieve her goal was when she met Gloria Dump, how that encouraged Opal to achieve her goal was, Gloria gave Opal more confidence, and Gloria’s listening to Opal talk more than any of the other characters except for Winn-Dixie. Gloria’s helping Opal find a new characteristic on herself, bye seeing if she has a green thumb, If she can plant

In the book Because Of Winn-Dixie, Opals facing some problems, the biggest one is she feels like an outsider in her town, she doesn’t have any friends her age. Opal is a ten year old girl who looks just as normal as any other person in her life. Opal has faced a few situations that make it hard for her to fit into her own town and make friends. First, Opal just moved to a new place in Naomi, Florida, so people don’t really know her all that well.
Next, Her dad’s a preacher, and she feels no one wants to be her friend because if they do something bad, Opal will go tell her dad, the Preacher and get in trouble with god, and their parents. It annoys Opal to think about that, because to her, that should not matter. She would never tell her dad that stuff anyways.
Then, In church there’s these two boys named Dunlap and Stevie dewberry. To Opal they look like they could be twins but they’re not, Stevie is nine and Dunlap is ten like Opal. Stevie and Dunlap are really mean boys because they pick on Opal any chance they get. every time they see her they pick on her, like for going to see Gloria Dump, or her dog.
All in all, she’s been having an okay stay in her new town. She’s missing a couple things to make she life in florida perfect, but she’s still happy with her life. Opal is always happy and it’s not often people around her bring her down because she chooses her friends wisely.

The turning point in the book is when Opal has a party at Gloria Dumps house, everyone was invited, even the Dewberry boys were. It was out side, it wasn’t supposed to rain, but it just so happens a Thunderstorm came rubbling through their party. (Winn-Dixie had a Pathological fear of thunderstorms, a pathological which is a very strong fear that you can’t control) Everyone at the party took the food and drinks inside and helped out the two oldest people there (Gloria Dump and Mrs. Franny Block) inside. Once everyone got inside, they all settled down but Gertrude (a colorful bird) squawked “Dog!”
Opal went running outside to go look for Winn-Dixie when the Dewberry boys arrived. She had to excuse herself from her party and go look for Winn-Dixie. Opal and her dad went around town and looked, it soon became a little darker, less rain, and the Preacher said he wanted to go home and continue tomorrow. Opal didn’t wanna even think about giving up on looking for Winn-Dixie. This was their conversation;
Opal- “but Daddy, Winn-Dixie’s out there somewhere. We can’t leave him.” (Pause) “I can’t believe you’re going to give up.”
Preacher- “India Opal, don’t argue with me.” (Pause) “It’s time to head back.”
Opal- “No, go ahead and go but I’m going to keep on looking.”
Preacher- “Opal, it’s time to give up.”
Opal- “You always give up!, You’re always pulling your head inside your stupid old turtle shell. I bet you didn’t even go out lookin’ for my momma when she left. I bet you just let her run off, too.
Preacher- “Baby, I couldn’t stop her. I tried. Don’t you think I wanted her to stay, too? Don’t you think I miss her every day? I tried. I tried” (Then he started crying)
This made Opal learn that if you truly love something, You have to let it go, and if it loves you as well, it will come back to you.

The most Dynamic character in the story is Opal, in the beginning of the book she judged people on their facial expressions. She hung out with older people at first. Well, except for Sweetie Pie Thomas, but that’s beside the point. As soon as she started to loosen up a bit on who she wanted for friends, she became friends with (pinched face) Amanda. Opal only became friends with the kids her age because Gloria Dump made her invite the Dewberry boys and Mrs. Franny made her invite Amanda.
I think Opal changed emotionally because of Gloria Dump and because of loosing Winn-Dixie. Gloria made her realize not to judge people by their facial expressions and to give people a chance, while loosing Winn-Dixie made her take a second look around her and see how many real friends she has, how much people really do like her. Opal grew up mentally through out this book, and I think she’s proud to have such good friends and family around her, which brings me to this topic......
Opal, through out the story, learned that if you really love something or somebody, you have to let them go. If they love you enough they will come back. It’s a tough thing to do, when you love someone so much, and you leave them. Opal learned thats she doesn’t need her mom in her life to feel happy for her to have her heart full of love. Her heart is no longer empty with or without her mom. In conclusion, Opal has learned allot of lessons through out the story to name them all, but that’s apart of coming of age, In order for you to grow up and have common sense, you have to go through life lessons.
